BRIEF HISTORY OF THE WEB AND HOW THE INTERNET WORKS .

Sir Tim Berners-lee invented the world wide web in the year 1989. Sir tim berners is a british computer scientist. He was born in london, and the parent were early computer scientists, working on one of the earliest computers.

Growing up , sir tim was interested in trains and had one in his room. After graduating from oxford university, tim became a software engineer at CERN. Scientist come from all over the world to use its accelerators, but sir tim noticed that they were having difficulty sharing information.

Already a million of computers were being connected together through the fast-developing internet and Berners-lee realized they could share information by exploiting an emerging technology called hypertext.

In march 1989, Sir tim laid down his mission and his proposal was not first accepted by his boss, Mike sendell. He was given time to work on web in september 1990 though not as CERN’S official project.

In october,1990, Tim had written the three fundamental technology which still remains the foundation of today’s web. which are HTML(hypertext markup language),URI( uniform resource identifier) also known as the URL and HTTP(hypertext transfer protocol.

By the end of 1990 the first web page was served on the internet and in 1991 people outside the CERN were invited to join this new web community. The web began to grow and it has being growing from then till now.

What is internet?

Internet in simple term is a global computer networks for communication. It is a network of networks , a networking infrastructure that connects millions of computers together globally, forming a network in which any computer as long as they are connected to the internet. The internet moves data from one place to another, so that we can chat ,browse and share.

How it works

The internet works through a packet routing network in the internet protocol, the transport control system and other protocols

Terms associated to the internet

Protocol

It is a set of rules specifying how computers should interact with each other over a network, just like the transport control protocol which has a rule that if one computer sends data to another computer, the destination computer should let the source computer know if any data is missing so the source computer can re-send it.

Packet

Packet is unit of data that is routed between origin and destination on the internet. Data sent across the internet is called a message, these message is split into many fragments called packet. The internet protocol specifies how messages are packetized and are sent independently of each other.

Router

Router is used to transfer data packets between networks. The should be at least two networks within which a router is connected. Most routers are placed as gateways where the networks are connected. there are wired ,wireless ,core, edge and virtual routers available.

What is packet routing network?

It is a network that routes packets from a source computer to a destination computer. When a packet moves from one router to another it is called hop.
